The municipality of Garopaba and the artisanal fishermen

Garopaba is a coastal municipality in Santa Catarina, Brazil, and its name has indigenous origins, meaning something like “boat inlet” or “place of boats”. The name already illustrates a bit about the reality of the region, which has a close connection with artisanal fishing.

For many years, small-scale fishing was the main economic source of the city, which today remains as an art and passion for Garopaba’s residents. The fishermen work throughout the year, but two seasons are the most prosperous: the mullet season, which occurs from May to July, and the anchovy season, which takes place from August to November.

In addition to maritime fishing, the city still has artisanal fishing for fish and crustaceans in all the lagoons – Garopaba is part of the largest lagoon complex in southern Brazil.

The fishermen sell their catch on the central beach of the city and also in local fish markets. However, the cost of ice purchased from third parties was proving to be a hindrance for them to obtain more profits, and the municipality opened a bidding process to acquire its own machine.

The purchase of the flake ice machine

To meet the demand of local fishermen, the municipality of Garopaba was looking for a company to provide a high-production flake ice machine. The chosen company was Calabria, whose equipment stood out in all the necessary requirements.

The machine in question produces two tons of flake ice per day, enough to preserve the fish that is produced every day. Among the benefits that this equipment will provide for the population are:

Low energy consumption for ice production;

An exclusive water recycling system, capable of generating a 20% economy;

It does not use salt in the manufacturing process, therefore it does not alter the texture or flavor of the local fish;

Allows artisanal fishermen to obtain more profit, as they will no longer have to bear one of the initial costs, which was the purchase of ice before fishing;

Enables the population to have access to well-preserved fish, in accordance with sanitary requirements.
